Domestic Violence Advocate

 Job Description

 

Advocates for HELP of Door County, Inc. (“HELP”), routinely provide support to victims and their families that can include food assistance, housing assistance (emergency shelter and transitional housing), childcare assistance, referrals for job training, and assistance with an array of additional impacts such as transportation, enrollment of school age children in area schools, health care assistance, and clothing/supplies for families in transition due to violence.

 

Primary Responsibilities Include:

 

  • Works directly with survivors to provide advocacy, case management, and referrals to appropriate
  • Acts as a liaison between victims of domestic violence and other crimes with community partners; law enforcement, human services and other groups.
  • Ensures victims are informed of the status of their cases and any related criminal
  • Provides court preparation and accompanies clients to
  • Networks with and makes referrals to other agencies that could assist
  • Meet regularly/quarterly with the patrol officers assigned to non-Sturgeon Bay areas of the county and can also develop relationships with the school resource officers and guidance counselors located at Gibraltar, Sevastopol, Washington Island and Southern Door Schools.
  • Provide equitable, culturally relevant outreach, resources, support, and services to all victims in currently underserved areas of the county; including serving Northern and Southern Door. Support can include legal advocacy, housing advocacy, economic, transportation, assistance with children, and food assistance.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of a growing advocacy program by facilitating and co-creating curriculum for youth-led programming; to include presentations to area schools (non-Sturgeon Bay), service clubs, churches, libraries, and any other location that will reach potential victims.
  • Provide crisis intervention to survivors of crimes and their loved ones at clinic sites, hospitals, and other sites by responding to the immediate emotional and physical needs of crime victims making sure they are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Increase coordination and collaboration with the Door County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD) through the development of relationships with individual police officers and Door County Human Services (DCHS) through development of relationships with county social workers that serve elders, adults, and children; including outreach to area restaurants, bars, and gathering places such as libraries, grocery store bulletin boards, YMCA’s, allied nonprofits and service clubs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience working with victims of domestic abuse or other crimes and an understanding of trauma and its effects. On-the-job training is provided.
  • Commitment to and a passion for collaborating with diverse community
  • Have excellent verbal and written
  • Have a valid drivers’ license and vehicle liability
  • Be empathetic, nonjudgmental, respectful, and empowering when serving
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the dynamics of domestic abuse and able to respond appropriately in crisis
  • Capable of adhering to the philosophy, mission, and policies of
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teammates and community
  • Must have the ability to manage time effectively and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision once fully trained.

 

Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, extended hours, including evening and weekend hours, are required based upon client need and programming. 

 

Compensation:

Compensation of between $42,000-$45,000 annually is based on experience.  Available benefits include:

Typical physical and mental demands:

Requires sitting, standing, bending, and reaching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and standard office equipment. Requires hearing within normal range and vision correctable to 20/20 to read communications, reports, and computer terminals. Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for clients and/or the organization at any given point in time. Must be able to communicate and professionally provide verbal feedback. Must be able to analyze the causes of interpersonal conflicts and resolve complex communication issues. Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions independently. Ability to give, receive, and analyze information, formulate plans, prepare written materials, and articulate goals and action plans. Must handle novel and diverse work problems daily. Must be able to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
