General Summary

The Museum and Archives Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Door County Historical Museum and the Door County Archives. The Museum and Archives Manger will provide leadership and expertise in management and presentation of both the Museum and Archives collections.  The Manager will direct the implementation of presentations, online and physical exhibitions, programming, special projects, collections management, and access to historical services. The Museum and Archives Manager will provide truthful and accurate communications at all times.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Manage the preservation of historical records and artifacts in all formats using archival and conservational skills and methods.
  2. Recommend, draft and implement policies and procedures for archives and museum management.
  3. Oversee the collection of documents and artifacts related to Door County heritage and culture; serve as a resource for Door County heritage organizations.
  4. Work closely with county departments and their needs.
  5. Provide reference services for the public.
  6. Encourage and support the use of the Museum and Archives for programming, research projects, and student internships.
  7. Oversee the creation of finding aids and records in the Museum and Archives collection management software (CMS).
  8. Work with Museum and Archives staff to develop new exhibits, programs, and initiatives.
  9. Supervise, train, and provide performance feedback for Museum and Archives staff and volunteers.
  10. Communicate and collaborate with local, regional, and state historical entities; attend conferences and other professional functions, and participate in other activities as requested.
  11. Identify and pursue grants and other funding opportunities to enhance Museum and Archives services.
  12. Advocate for the value of history and historical materials in the Door County community.
  13. Monitor and approve employee hours in payroll software.
  14. Collaborate with the Department Head on yearly budget process and monitor and approve budget expenditures.
  15. Manage Accounts Payable and Museum donations using the Door County financial software.

 

Requirements

 

Required Training and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in history, archives, librarianship, or a related field in any combination deemed adequate to fulfill the duties of this position.
  2. Valid driver’s license.
  3. A passion for Door County History and sharing that history with others.
  4. Excellent customer service skills.
  5. Strong computer skills; experience with cataloging or archival software preferred.

 

Preferred Training and Experience

  1. MA in History or Museum Studies, MLS in Library Science with Archival Concentration, or equivalent archival and/or museum experience.
  2. Knowledge of best practices in digital heritage.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  1. Ability to staff all Museum/Archives positions as needed.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  3. Ability to work with the public and maintain effective public relations.
  4. Ability to work in a collaborative environment with tact and courtesy, both within the Museum/Archives and the wider community.
  5. Ability to effectively manage staff and volunteers in a variety of contexts.
  6. Ability to lift varying weights, bend, reach and stoop is a part of this position.
  7. Ability to travel.

 

Physical & Working Conditions

80% of work is performed in a normal office setting. Interacting with other employees and the public, whether in person or on the telephone may be encountered. 20% of work is performed in and around museum displays and in artifact and archival collections storage spaces. The person in this position must be able to move about in both environments to access materials and equipment, supervise projects and to monitor public access. Displays and storage spaces may be narrow and confined. The person in this position should be prepared to assist with moving large or cumbersome objects up to 50 pounds.

 

To provide for continuity of County government and to cope with the problems of the emergency, you may be required to work during a proclaimed state of emergency consistent with Sec.323.14 Wis. Stats. and County emergency management plans and programs.
